Written in 1958, Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart consists of a tragic hero protagonist who suffers when change is upon him. Okonkwo, the main characters,  inflexibility causes him to act in an inappropriate manner, (eventually leading to his death). This is all due to the fact that his father left him with only a legacy of failure when he died. Okonkwo attempts to strive as far away from this legacy as possible as it is his greatest fear. The fear of becoming his father sends him down a narrow-minded road causing him to develop considerable conflicts with himself and with those around him. The conflicts become augmented once the British arrive in Nigeria. The protagonist Okonkwo is incredibly significant in the story Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe. The novel is fictitious yet Achebe has included true events regarding the time period of the 1880s. Through Okonkwo, Achebe has showcased to readers as to how some of the natives felt about the Europeans invading Umuofia. Although many villagers did not mind the 'colonization', it was a drastic moment in Okonkwo's life. The reason regarding the quotations around the word 'colonization' is because, many people then, (and still today), believe that Nigeria was only civilized once the Europeans invaded but this is not the case.
